Welcome to Media Studies GCSE at The De La Salle Academy
What will you be studying?
You will be studying and creating different types of media over a two year period.
The main Media concepts and ideas:
- Media texts: Genre, Narrative and Representation
- Media Organisations
- Media Audiences and Users
You will learn about these and constantly revisit them during the course.
In all your investigations of media texts and practical production work, you will engage and reflect on these concepts.

There are two main parts to the course:
Unit 1. Thinking about the Media: Investigating and planning.
External Assessment: Written Examinations:
Worth 40% of your final grade
To take place in JUNE 2016.
The topic for the exam will be Film trailers and Film Posters;
Section A: Thinking about the media - Investigating
Four questions: candidates respond to stimulus material chosen from a topic set by WJEC.
This section will also assess the way the contemporary media is convergent.
The topic for section A will be Film trailers
Section B: Thinking about the media - Planning
A series of tasks: candidates demonstrate planning and creative skills through a series of creative tasks which demonstrates knowledge of the convergent nature of the contemporary media.
The topic for section B will be Film Posters
Unit 2. Controlled Assessment. Worth 60% of your final grade
Creating for the media: Investigating and Producing
Candidates must complete:
two textual investigations, one based on genre and the other on narrative or representation issues of 400-850 words or equivalent depending on the presentational form selected (10% for each investigation)
one production, consisting of research, planning, production and an evaluation of 300-500 words or equivalent depending on the presentational form selected (40%).

First off, it is important that you know what is meant by 'the media'.
A general definition is that it is a way of communication that reaches a lot of people.
Using this definition the media includes, amongst others:
- Television
- Film
- Newspapers
- Magazines and comics
- Radio
- Music
- Websites
- Computer Games
- Advertising
The productions of each media industry are media texts.
For example Eastenders is a product of the television industry.

4. GCSE Unit 1 Examination
T he GCSE Unit 1 exam topic for June 2016 is Advertising and Marketing; Film Trailers for Section A and Film Posters for Section B. The resource material will be provided in audio-visual format, please see page 10 of the GCSE Media Studies Specification for full details regarding the viewing of the audio-visual extract.For 2016, the following productions are not permitted, as they are based on the Unit 1 topic of Advertising and Marketing:
- Music Video
- Adverts
- Film or TV trailer
- Film / TV / Music Poster Campaign
Centres are asked to note the Unit 1 examination topics for future series detailed on page 6 of the GCSE Media Studies Specification.
